HIV/AIDS and the Millennium Development Goals and Targets
189 Member States of the United Nations adopted the Millennium Declaration at the Millennium Summit held in New York in September 2000. This contained a group of eight goals and targets, which have since become known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
These eight goals are centred on national targets for poverty, education, gender equality, and environmental sustainability, but also include targets for establishing an international trade and finance policy framework that favours development. Numerical targets have been set for each goal, most of which are to be achieved by 2015. Included in these goals is a direct reference to HIV and AIDS. This is Goal 6 Ð but the chance of this goal and target being achieved is very much tied up with other goals being reached.
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
- Halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS
- Halt and begin to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases
