Course Outline and Structure

This unit supports students who want to explore the global development issues that effect our world. It will help them develop the skills necessary to affect positive change in their own lives and also to see their actions as part of a wider change for a more just world. Through a series of thematic strands such as: Poverty, Conflict, Gender Inequality, Sustainable Environments, Trade, Health & HIV and Aids, and Human Rights, students can investigate the causes and consequences of actions on these global issues. Through research, learning and action within their own communities, students will be empowered to see the possibility of having a positive impact on a global scale.

Students will be encouraged to become advocates for those who are marginalized. Students will develop a critical voice and become more active citizens at local and global level.

This Transition Year Unit is supported by a wide range of resources such as: Worksheets, Film guides, NGO resources, Photo packs, Links to relevant web sites, Games and simulations, Case studies, Presentations and Global maps. The unit can also compliment students' engagement in other projects such as the Young Social Innovators competition and the BT Young Scientists and the ‘Science for Development Award'.
