Strand Outline: Poverty


  1. Students define Poverty by using images.
  2. Students investigate the cyclical nature of Poverty by participating in an activity to look at the causes & effects of poverty. 
  3. Students look at the concepts of: Relative Poverty, Absolute Poverty and the Poverty Line using activities outlined in the resource list.
  4. Students critically examine the portrayal of Poverty by NGO posters or other media.
  5. Students research how Poverty is measured globally using concepts such as GNP and HDI.
  6. Students familiarise themselves with Africa by completing a blank map of the continent filling in as many names of countries as they can. Students identify one positive image and one cultural aspect of a particular African country.
  7. Students research a case study of an African country to see how the concept of cyclical poverty applies to that country.
  8. Students participate in a series of activities to introduce the idea poverty risks and social exclusion.
  9. Students research the response of governments to the issues of Poverty by examining National Anti-Poverty Strategies.
  10. Students look at community response to Poverty such as microcredit.
